Dream Dictionary: Snakes in Dreams

in Psychology
Home Psychology

It’s a pretty common thing to see snakes in dreams. Reptiles, including snakes, lizards, and dinosaurs, are an ancient form of life. Primitive urges are often referred to as “reptilian.”

Dreaming of a reptile is therefore frequently linked to our most basic, primitive reactions such as flight or fight, attraction and repulsion, need for food, reproduction, sex drive and reaction to pain.

Dreams of amphibians like frogs or toads are also connected to unconscious life and growth processes, particularly those that can lead to transformations.

Interpretation of Snakes in Dreams

Snakes in dreams can often represent the life process as a whole. If a person’s life is pictured as a whole, it has the quality of flowing from beginning to end. The snake can depict the force and energy behind that movement; the purposefulness.

In some dreams, the snake may represent a person’s sexuality, their digestion, or the healing or poisonous energy of their thoughts and emotions. Snakes in dreams, can also represent blind impulsive urges, the tendency to strike out instinctively.

What Does it Mean to Dream of a Snake Bite?

Snakes in dreams that bite you could perhaps indicate a frustrated sexual impulse or unconscious health worries. A snake biting the dreamer could also relate to internalized aggression; the dreamer may be turning their emotions against themselves, resulting in “poisoning” themselves. Some analysts believe this can even contribute to real illnesses.

If the dreamer sees a snake bite another person, this could be suggestive of the concept of “biting remarks,” a poisonous tongue or emotional energy that an individual directs toward others.

Further Analysis of Snakes in Dreams

To dream of a snake in connection with any hole can symbolise sexual relatedness. To dream of being in the coils of a snake could indicate the dreamer is feeling bound in “blind impulses” or habitual drives.

A dream of a snake in the grass might convey intuition of sneaky behaviour and others talking behind the dreamer’s back.

A snake crowned or encircled with light is a potent and positive dream symbol, as it is thought to symbolize the integration of unconscious drives with conscious insight and will. Thus, it can indicate maturity and self-awareness.

A snake with its tail in its mouth can convey the dreamer’s sense of the circle of life; the eternal.

A snake coiling up a tree, pole, or cross is another powerful dream symbol, and is believed to symbolize the emergence of consciousness from instinctive life. It can thus also represent the healing power that such consciousness can bring.

Meaning of Snake Colours in Dreams

Dreaming of a white snake is thought to especially represent the eternal processes of life experience, and the dreamer’s growing awareness of these.

A green snake is thought to symbolise healing processes, and those that lead to positive change and growth. A blue snake is believed to symbolise religious feelings or conversely, coldness in relationships with others.

Interpretation of Dreams about Lizards and Dinosaurs

Dreams about lizards are similar in interpretation to those about snakes, bar the poisonous aspect. They are thought to similarly refer to awareness of unconscious and instinctive drives, functions and processes.

Dreams about dinosaurs may reflect a sense of the primordial past out of which the present self has grown. They could also refer to feelings out being outmoded, instinctive, clumsy or extinct.

Analysis of a Frog or Toad in a Dream

Dreaming of a frog can indicate an awareness of the unconscious processes that can lead to transformations in life. A frog transforms from a tadpole to a froglet and can symbolize the growth from childhood vulnerability to wisdom. The frog in the fairytale is repulsive to the princess, as sexuality may seem repulsive to a child. When embraced, however, the frog turns into a prince. This could symbolize the potential for the transformation of sexuality into something attractive.

To dream of a toad is often thought to represent the most basic of biological drives and processes, such as those having to do with the internal organs like the liver, bowels, and digestive tracts—areas people may feel squeamish about. It is also suggested by some analysts that a dream of a toad may symbolize a cold-blooded or ugly facet of the dreamer.

Free dream analysis and free dream interpretation are widely available online. But the best interpretations are those that are made by the dream itself.
